Former President John Dramani Mahama has described the Ashanti region as hostile territory for his opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and has lauded individuals who brave the odds to openly declare their support for the party in the ruling party’s stronghold.
Interacting with hundreds of party faithful and executives at a meeting in Kumasi to wrap up his 2-day “Thank You Tour” of the Ashanti Region, the 2020 flag bearer of the opposition party said though Ashanti’s recognize the fact that they only see development when the NDC is power, they treat the party and its supporters like some outcasts.
“We know that the Ashanti region is said to be the stronghold of our brothers (NPP), so working in this terrain is difficult; may God bless those of you who have accepted to be our foot soldiers and our executives, because it is not easy to openly declare that you are a member of the NDC here”, he told the crowd.
In the midst of deafening cheers, the opposition leader added that “it is either you would be intimidated, or be looked down upon like a leper; they look at your face and express shock that you are an NDC member as if you are a leper or you are unclean. So we know how difficult the work is; but the Ashanti region is also very critical because, after the creation of new regions, the Ashanti region has become the second region where we got most of our votes, after combining what we got from the Volta and Oti regions”.
The interaction was the climax of Mr. John Dramani Mahama’s tour of the region to thank the people for their votes in the 2020 General Elections in which he was defeated by President Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He began his tour on Sunday in the Ejura Sekyedumase Constituency where a durbar of the chiefs and people of Frante was mounted in his honor.
On Monday, the former president started his tour with a radio interview on Kumasi-based New Mercury FM and then had a meeting with some religious leaders before wrapping it up with the interaction with party members and executives and the Promising Stars Hotel in the Suame Constituency.
